GOODWIN, Terry David – 50 ans, Lunenburg (Nouvelle-Écosse), est décédé le vendredi 30 septembre au Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, à Lunenburg, après une lutte acharnée contre le cancer du cerveau. Terry était le fils bien-aimé de Walter et Truleen Goodwin, de Amherst. Après avoir contracté le sida en 1983, il consacra plusieurs années de sa vie au bien-être des personnes atteintes du sida. Fondateur du premier organisme d’action-sida, il défendit le droit des survivants de couples de même sexe à des prestations, et mit sur pied, à Halifax, un programme visant la prolongation de la vie des PVS et l’amélioration de sa qualité. En plus de son dévouement à la lutte anti-sida, Terry a présidé le Lunenburg Family Resource Centre après avoir déménagé dans cette ville en 1995. La plus grande satisfaction que lui apporta son travail communautaire à Lunenburg fut peut-être le programme « de retour à la terre » qu’il créa à l’intention des jeunes toxicomanes et de ceux touchés par la toxicomanie d’un proche. La communion avec la nature a beaucoup amélioré leur estime de soi et leurs habiletés fondamentales. En 2000, les participants au programme ont présenté à Terry un certificat de mérite. Artiste talentueux, Terry a peint plusieurs tableaux abstraits. Il a occupé les fonctions de secrétaire du Club Rotary de Lunenburg pendant trois ans. Ont survécu à Terry, ses parents Walter et Trullen Goodwin, sa sœur Patti Kim Goodwin, son beau-frère John Weir et son meilleur ami George Munroe. Il manquera à son entourage et à Ariel, son petit chien noir.

GOODWIN, Terry David – 50, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, died Friday, September 30, 2005, after a valiant battle with brain cancer in Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Terry was the much beloved son of Walter and Truleen Goodwin, Amherst. In 1983 he contracted AIDS and in the years that followed devoted his entire efforts to the well being of persons with AIDS. He was responsible for the opening of the first AIDS service organization where he worked for pension benefits for partner survivors, and developed in Halifax a program aimed at prolonging the lives and improving the life quality of P.W.A.’s. He did not only work in the AIDS Community, but in 1995 moved to Lunenburg where he was chairperson of the Lunenburg Family Resource Centre. Perhaps the most satisfying community work he did in Lunenburg was the establishment of the Farm Project of the Youth Support Programs which worked with youth with addiction problems and those afflicted by family members with addiction problems. By bringing youth back to the soil, their self-esteem and life skills were improved. In 2000 the farm participants presented him with an award of merit. A talented artist, he produced many abstract works. For three years Terry was the charter secretary of the Lunenburg Rotary Club. Terry is survived by parents, Walter and Truleen Goodwin; sister, Patti Kim Goodwin and her husband John Weir, and his best friend, George Munroe. He will be missed by his small black dog, Ariel.
