Our Own Health Centre to Host an Event to Honor the Canadian Aids Society
Winnipeg.
Our Own Health Centre will celebrate the work of the Canadian Aids Society on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at their new location at 286 McDermot Avenue (corner of King and McDermot).
According to Dick Smith, the Medical Director of Our Own Health Centre (OOHC), “a great deal of progress has been made in the fight against AIDS. From a disease that killed horribly and a society that fearfully despised its victims to a manageable chronic illness, and an epidemic which realistic scientists now are working to end and a country where gay men and lesbians can marry & adopt children.”
The patient and constructive advocacy of the Canadian Aids Society played a major role in these dramatic advances. We believe that this coalition of Canadian community-based organizations deserve a tremendous thanks for all that they have done and continue to do for the health and well being of our community. This award and event will celebrate the positive difference that they have made.
Smith emphasized that “we still have to fight AIDS, even if few people in Canada actually get that form of the disease anymore. Although it is not the horror it once was, HIV is still the most important health issue in the gay and bisexual community.
Our Own Health Centre is a non-for-profit multi-disciplinary health clinic in the heart of the Exchange District that is dedicated to providing a welcoming and safe space for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men to access healthcare without discrimination or feelings of shame. The clinic plays an important role in HIV care, both in initially identifying the disease (rapid testing) and in providing caring for the general health issues of me. Our Own Health Centre is also open to anyone living, working, or visiting this dynamic part of Winnipeg.
