Responding to the Epidemic: Recommendations for a Canadian Hepatitis C Strategy

Fourteen Canadians become infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) daily. That’s 5,000 Canadians who contract this potentially fatal liver disease every year. Add these people to the 250,000+ Canadians who are already living with HCV, and Canada has the makings of an alarming epidemic.

Surprisingly, unlike many countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Canada does not have a comprehensive, long-term strategy to address the prevention, care, treatment, support and research issues associated with HCV. Up until now, Canadians living with, and affected by HCV have struggled along with short-term and inadequate federal programs that fail to recognize the epidemic in their midst.

This has not gone un-noticed by people living with HCV, and the community groups and organizations that serve those who are infected.

On November 22nd to 24th, representatives from a variety of organizations, working to improve the lives of those who are HCV+, gathered in Ottawa to publicly launch the document they have collaboratively written entitled, “Responding to the Epidemic: Recommendations for a Canadian Hepatitis C Strategy / Vers une réponse B l’épidémie: Recommandations pour une Stratégie canadienne sur l’hépatite C”.
