Canadian AIDS Society Announces 2006 Leadership Award Recipients

OTTAWA, June 17, 2006 – Recipients of the 2006 Canadian AIDS Society Leadership Awards were announced last night at the Society’s Annual General Meeting. The two recipients, Devan Nambiar and CANPAR Transport, have exemplified the Canadian commitment by individuals and corporations towards the Canadian AIDS movement.

Nambiar is currently a full-time Treatment Consultant with the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE), his past and present work in the AIDS movement has been carried throughout Canada and across the globe. “Devan Nambiar’s work in treatment-related issues and international drug access issues, among others, has not only positioned him as a leader in Canada, but has also had great impact around the world,” said Gail Flintoft, chair of the Canadian AIDS Society Board of Directors. “We are very pleased to present him with this award.”

Nambiar’s hard work and experience have played key roles in the many HIV/AIDS organizations that he’s involved with. The Canadian HIV Clinical Trials Network, the Ontario HIV Treatment Network, Voices of Positive Women, North American Treatment Action Forum, and the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention are just some of the organizations which have benefited from his involvement.

Since 1997, CANPAR Transport has been a national corporate sponsor of the Walk for Life. With CANPAR’s support, the Canadian AIDS Society has been able to promptly send promotional materials across the country each year. These print materials are crucial to helping local Walk sites raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS in their community.

“CANPAR’s support of the Walk for Life helps to ensure that all funds raised in a community stays in that community,” says Flintoft. “For its ongoing support of the HIV/AIDS movement in Canada, we are pleased to also present CANPAR Transport with the 2006 Corporate Leadership Award.”

CANPAR has also been a key sponsor with other Canadian AIDS Society events, such as the Skills Building Symposium, the People Living with HIV/AIDS Forum, Annual General Meeting, as well as Giving Women Power Over AIDS, a traveling exhibit which showcases an award-winning photo essay and information about the drive to develop microbicides.
